Yes, Use Cases are coming back!
I’ve been following the Essence for Agility community and also a LinkedIn group that has been working towards reviving Use Cases.
Ivar Jacobson summarizes nicely this initiative and its motivation. He coins it “Modern use cases” or “Use Cases 3.0”. Check out Ivar’s participation in a podcast here:
A key takeaway from this meetup is the “Use Cases are Essential” - published in ACM Queue and accessible here.
Ivar and Alistair joined forces again to a new initiative: “Use Cases Foundation” - accessible here!
The same community of Essence with Agility organized another meetup, on combining Use Cases and User Stories. Wait? What? You probably thought they were rivals…or at least used in an exclusive way.
if that’s the case, check out the meetup recording below!
If Use Cases are compatible with User Stories… I can also tell you they’re compatible with Story Mapping!
Use Cases, User Stories, Story Maps… Dr. Alistair Cockburn summarized them nicely, in a lightweight book:
Following this community’s call for action, the outcomes of its initiatives are regularly published in this LinkedIn group: Reframing Use Cases —> https://www.linkedin.com/groups/12993307/
